I don’t have as much of a problem with BBC Formula 1 commentator Jonathan Legard as a great many people do. He’s a bit bland, but that’s about it. The same could be said for James Allen before him. Maybe partnering Martin Brundle is just a tough job.

But this morning, in the qualifying sessions for the Korean Grand Prix, I couldn’t help but shout at my TV. It was a fantastically tense session, particularly in Q3 when it built to a climax with Sebastian Vettel, Mark Webber and Fernando Alonso battling for pole position.

It was predicted from the track layout that the first sector, dominated by long straights, wouldn’t suit the Red Bull Racing car, but the rest of the circuit probably would. That prediction was quickly shown to be correct.

But still, on Vettel’s first flying lap, when he was half a second down on Alonso after the first sector, Legard wrote the lap off. It took Brundle to remind him that Vettel would make a lot of time up on the second and third sectors. Which he did.

Stunningly, Legard did it again on Vettel’s final flying lap: he was down after the first sector, which was a bad sign for Legard. Vettel then went on to take pole position by quite a margin. Even I could see it coming. Pay attention, Legard!
