It was mere weeks ago that I was wondering exactly what Codemasters might do with the Formula 1 license next. Well, a few scant – very scant – details have emerged. But to my mind they’re significant – and encouraging.

Codemasters CEO Rod Cousens has been speaking to games trade thing MCV, and the F1 license was high on the discussion agenda. Next year’s main instalment – the sequel to the rather successful F1 2010 – will “definitely not be a few new tracks and a few new drivers.” He means it will be more than that, presumably. From what has been said before, improvements to the media side and multiplayer are on the cards for F1 2011. But essentially it’s going to be another F1 simulation.

What interest me more are the other games Cousens mentions. One is a title for “very young kids” for all mainstream formats – which strikes me as a brave, but potentially shrewd move. Could it utilise the motion-sensing abilities of the Wii, PlayStation Move, and Kinect for Xbox 360? Pure speculation on my part, but it might make sense – and it would be a point of differentiation between the kids’ title and the main instalment.

New handheld versions are also planned – which must mean Nintendo 3DS and Sony’s follow-up to the PSP. Given that there are no concrete details of the PSP 2 or whatever it ends up being called, inevitably it’s the potential of a 3DS version that has my attention. For those not in the know, it’s Nintendo’s successor to the DS, and it’s got a 3D screen – which works without glasses. In short: it’s looking very smart. So a Formula 1 game in 3D, on the move? It’s definitely intriguing.

Which is exactly what I hoped Codemasters would do with the license. Yes, do simulations for the powerful consoles. But innovate on other platforms too. There’s even a browser-based title on the way. All bases covered, by the sounds of it. Now we just need some actual details!
