Ferrari, and chairman Luca di Montezemolo in particular, just can’t help being provocative.

In a Q&A on the Ferrari website, he has another dig at Formula 1’s new teams:

“We’re continuing to fight until every team has the right to start with three cars in the next season (and one I’d have handed over to Michael with pleasure). I prefer three McLaren and three Renault to three ‘whatevers’. With BMW gone, there’s not much to say but lots to do.”

He doesn’t care that his team will have to work with the sport’s new blood, does he? It’s not the first time Ferrari have belittled the new guys, after all.

Also, notice that he doesn’t mention Williams as a team of which he approves. Perhaps not surprising given the dig in their direction – on the Ferrari website, naturally – when Williams objected to Michael Schumacher testing the F60.

For what it’s worth, I can’t think of anything worse than a full time Michael Schumacher return. It would be fascinating to see him back for a limited time – and find out whether he’s still got it – but anything more would be a depressing waste. Exciting young drivers are what I want to see.

That’s not what Montezemelo wants for Felipe Massa’s stand-in though:

“I prefer the champion, even if matured, to the mediocre driver, even if he’s young.”

Which, by my reckoning, means Luca Badoer – who’s taking Massa’a place in place of Schumacher – must be mediocre. Which is probably accurate, but possibly harsh. Though he’s certainly not young.

That’s not what Montezemelo actually says about Badoer though. No, he bangs on about “faith” and “support”, and calls him “one of us”. Which is nothing like as much fun.
