A spider’s web, and other livery highlights

So, we’ve established that the racing at Brands Hatch on Sunday wasn’t exactly scintillating. But! All the more time to try to get half-decent photos of the more interesting liveries on display.

Livery of the day

Kessel Racing, International GT Open, Brands Hatch, 24th July 2011

We go straight to International GT Open, and the number 11 Ferrari 458 GT Italia run by Kessel Racing, driven by Philipp Peter and Michael Broniszewski. It only finished 10th and 17th in the races, but by jingo it had the best livery around. A delightful shade of yellow and a spider’s web, you say? Sold!

Formula Two

The top liveries were better rewarded in Formula Two.

Jack Clarke, Formula Two, Brands Hatch, 24th July 2011

Jack Clarke’s rather snazzy little black, yellow and blue number picked up the race win on Saturday, and third on Sunday. His may have been the most visually appealing paint job, but I want to heap praise elsewhere.

Top marks go to Ramon Pineiro, winner of race two, and second in race one. Before Brands Hatch, his car was already pretty fluorescent yellow. But that wasn’t good enough for our young Spanish friend. So he upped the yellowness to previously unseen levels. Good work, lad.

Lotus Cup UK / Europe

Pete Storey, Lotus Cup UK / Europe, Brands Hatch, 24th July 2011

It’s not particularly associated with Lotus, but there were a couple of Gulf Oil liveried entries in the Lotus Cup UK / Europe. Pete Storey’s Lotus 2-Eleven, above, was a particularly pleasing example of that most distinctive of colour combinations.

Surprisingly, there was only one entry inspired by the black and gold of ’70s and ’80s John Player Special-era Team Lotus. Personally, I’ve never been a fan of it – though I wasn’t a fully functioning human back then. Rose-tinted specs, if you ask me. Frank Berger’s Lotus 2-Eleven did nothing to change my mind.

It wasn’t all historic liveries, though. Christophe Lisandre’s Lotus 2-Eleven, for example, was a far more modern effort – and probably my pick of the Lotus paint jobs. It was certainly the jazziest on the grid. Deep black, resplendent with bright multi-colour stripes. Very satisfying.
