Celebrating advent with motorsport’s best names. Obviously.

It’s another vowel-heavy name today: former Formula 1 back-marker and now WTCC driver Tiago Monteiro. Saying his name is a bit of a tongue workout, and for that reason I approve.

Celebrating advent with motorsport’s best names. Obviously.

He’s just won the British F3 International Series, he’s Spanish, and his surname is one hell of a mouthful: it’s Jaime Alguersuari! It’s the abundance of vowels that pleases me most.

It’s another person qualifying on first name alone today: Mercedes-Benz motorsport boss Norbert Haug. Haug is only a modestly good surname, but Norbert is just an absolute stonker of a first name. The parents of all Norberts deserve recognition for their dedication to good names.

‘Same syllable at the end of the first name and start of the second name’ weekend continues with the WTCC’s Nicola Larini. He’s Italian, and I’d forgotten that he was in Formula 1 in the late ’80s and early ’90s, most notably finishing second in the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix, where Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenberger both lost their lives.

It’s ‘same syllable at the end of the first name and start of the second name’ weekend on the Good Name Advent Calendar, and first up we have Mika Kallio. The newly promoted MotoGP rider has a strong, spiky name to go with his Finnish nationality.

We come home to Britain for some Friday fun with Stephen Jelley, BTCC driver of little consequence. He might have one ‘e’ too many in his surname, but jelly is jelly, and that’s a lot of fun.

We travel to Venezuela for today’s good name, and say hello to Pastor Maldonado, GP2 racer. Pastor is already a strong first name, but combined with Maldonado it forms a bouncing rhythm almost unmatched in motorsport.

Celebrating advent with motorsport’s best names. Obviously.

Sometimes a first name is good enough to qualify someone for having a good name, and peripheral Formula 1 character Vitantonio Liuzzi is such a person. He’s often called just Tonio, but it seems a shame when his full first name is so long and majestic.

Swedish WTCC driver Rickard Rydell has a good name for more reasons than simple alliteration. The ‘k’ gives the first name a nice spiky feel, which leads into a soft, spongy surname – courtesy of the ‘y’ and the double ‘l’ – creating a very pleasant contrast in such a short space. Most satisfying.

Celebrating advent with motorsport’s best names. Obviously.

Everyone loves an advent calendar, and everyone loves a good name. So every day in advent, I’ll be showcasing one of the best names in motorsport.

Where better to start than with an obscure rally driver? Nowhere, because I rather fancy that rally drivers will feature heavily in the coming month. So today: Alessandro Broccoli. He’s from San Marino, he’s taken part in the Monte Carlo and Swedish rounds of the WRC this year, and his surname is a tasty green vegetable. Excellent work.
