The FIA World Motor Sport Council meets today, and amongst many other things, under discussion will be any further punishment for Ferrari after the team orders charade earlier this year at the German Grand Prix. Which most people have largely forgotten about now, but never mind. There doesn’t seem to be any great consensus over what might be doled out: a bigger fine, a loss of constructors’ championship points, maybe a suspended ban of some sort. But all that seems terribly boring. I reckon the FIA should take inspiration from the often sarcastic tone of Ferrari’s website, and get imaginative with the punishment. Ferrari weren’t keen on Niki Lauda’s comments on team orders – even though there was a clarification later. So it would be delightful if the FIA handed Ferrari a suspended race ban, to be served only if they issue offensive team orders again – as judged by Niki Lauda. Or how about this. Ferrari’s attitude to the sport’s new teams is well documented. Maybe it’s mellowed by now. Even if it has, it would be apt punishment to move Ferrari’s garage down the pit lane to, say, between HRT and Virgin for 2011. Ferrari like to make snide little comments, and with their clumsy team orders damaged the image of Formula 1. So a humiliating, rather than financial or sporting punishment, actually seems very appropriate. And funny. There is 1 comment
