Michael Schumacher‘s return to Formula 1 is a pretty huge story. Inevitably, then, there is plenty of good analysis of the move.

So what can I add? Well, I can point to a post I wrote when he was looking to step in for Felipe Massa at Ferrari:

For what it’s worth, I can’t think of anything worse than a full time Michael Schumacher return. It would be fascinating to see him back for a limited time – and find out whether he’s still got it – but anything more would be a depressing waste. Exciting young drivers are what I want to see.

It’s less of a waste next season, with an extra six cars on the grid – hopefully. I’d even come around to the idea of a one-season Schumacher comeback. I was almost looking forward to it, to see whether it’s a massive failure or not.

But he’s signed a three-year deal with Mercedes. Three years?! Surely nobody needs – or wants – another three years of Michael Schumacher.

I’ve no particular justification for that comment. But people definitely fall into one of two camps: those for whom this is the second coming; and those who have – not necessarily for unpleasant reasons – had enough of him. I’m in the latter.
