It’s the Motor Sport Business Forum in Monaco this week, and very exciting it all sounds. Note: sarcasm.

Some of the things Gerard Lopez – one of the possibly four parties interested in buying the Renault F1 team – said (see autosport.com) have got my goat, so to speak. Like this:

“People don’t buy music any more.”

Rubbish and nonsense; a lazy generalisation. More:

“Even some video game platforms are being forced out of the market by online gaming.”

What?! Which? Online gaming is facilitated by video game platforms – virtually by definition!

I do agree with his main point that Formula 1 needs to make more effort to engage with its audience. But regurgitating received wisdom and pretty much making stuff up gets me riled.

And another thing:

“The fact is that in three or fours years’ time, most people in a lot of countries will be watching it not on TV as we know it today, but over the internet.”

Will they? Weren’t we all supposed to have PCs hooked up to our TVs in our living rooms by now?

I like sitting in front of my TV to watch races. Albeit with live timing on my laptop, all the while keeping an eye on Twitter.

New media is all well and good, but let’s not forget about old media – it’s where the quality coverage is, and where it will probably remain.
