There were some good results at the weekend, with championships closing up nicely… as a result. Sorry, I couldn’t think of a better word. A double victory for Colin Turkington in the British Touring Car Championship at Oulton Park moves him to within two points of championship leader Matt Neal. Casey Stoner won the MotoGP race at Mugello, breaking Valentino Rossi’s seven year home winning streak. Rossi finished third, with Jorge Lorenzo second. That moves Stoner to the top of the standings, four points ahead of Lorenzo, who is five points ahead of Rossi. A non-finish leaves Dani Pedrosa a satisfyingly distant fourth. The best news of the weekend also came from Mugello, where Brit Bradley Smith won the 125cc race. Incredibly, that moves him into the lead of the championship, just 3.5 points ahead of Julian Simon. Fantastic stuff, isn’t it? It was a good result for the Superbike World Championship at Miller Motorsport Park too. American Ben Spies grabbed a double victory at home, with Noriyuki Haga down in 9th and 8th. As such Haga’s lead over Spies has been cut from 75 to 50 points. Spies still has a lot of work to do though. Good news too for the World Touring Car Championship in Valencia, where Augusto Farfus took the first win of the season for BMW. The way the season has been going, with technical regulations not going remotely in BMW’s favour, the German manufacturer has been considering its position in the series. So this can only be encouraging for all involved. The one place where results really didn’t go where they needed to was Thruxton, which hosted British Superbikes. Leon Camier took another double win, so his championship lead just continues to increase. But on the plus side Michael Rutter, standing in on the Worx Crescent Suzuki, took a pair of fifth places, proving that he can still ride a bike, despite his utter lack of results on the Yamaha earlier in the season.
