I think we’re down to a three horse race for the Formula 1 drivers’ title.

Obviously there’s Jenson Button, currently top of the standings. His victory in Bahrain – where conditions were normal and he didn’t have the best car – has made me genuinely believe for the first time that he could actually take the title this year.

Rubens Barrichello is second in the championship, but I can’t see him overhauling Button. So Sebastian Vettel, in third, is the next man with a championship hope. The Red Bull is bloody good, and with a magic diffuser could be even better. For his part, Vettel has proved his class beyond any doubt. I think he’s my favourite to come out on top.

Jarno Trulli and Timo Glock are next in the championship, but I don’t think Toyota can be competitive for an entire season, and I’m not convinced that either driver has it in them to win the title. I would love to see Glock do it though.

Mark Webber is sixth in the standings, but again I can’t see him beating Vettel consistently enough to overtake.

Then we come to Lewis Hamilton, the other man I think is ultimately in the title chase. I’m not his biggest fan, but his capacity to remain focussed during incredibly trying times at McLaren has impressed me no end. And of course he’s actually scoring points, and McLaren is successfully developing the car at quite some pace.

Fernando Alonso is just behind Hamilton in the championship, and though I think he’ll do everything in his power to catch up with the current frontrunners, I don’t know that Renault can do it. And I’m hugely unconvinced that Ferrari can come back from such an appalling start to the season.

As for the constructors’ championship, I think Brawn GP is the strong favourite: a very good car, and two drivers bringing home the points week after week. Red Bull Racing and Toyota might be in with a shout, but there’s a big gap to be made up. McLaren and Renault will I think be let down by their under-performing second drivers – Heikki Kovalainen and Nelson Piquet respectively – even if their cars come good.
