The second meeting of the Superbike World Championship has been and gone, so it’s time to check again on how our Brits are doing.
Just before that though, it’s looking like a promising battle for the championship between Noriyuki Haga – one win followed by three second places – on the Ducati and Ben Spies – who has won the last three races – on the Yamaha. It’s almost as impressive that Haga has finished second three times rather than push too hard and bin it, as it is that Spies has won three out of four races so far in his first season of World Superbikes.
But the Brits. After a reasonable pair of 11th place finishes in Qatar, Leon Haslam on the Stiggy Honda remains top Brit, 5th in the championship. Perhaps more significantly, he’s also the top Honda rider – and that’s not even on a factory bike. In fact, Max Biaggi for the brand new Aprilia team is ahead of all the Honda entries. Harsh.
Tommy Sykes is the man on the move though, having finished 7th and 5th at the weekend, now sitting 6th overall. Given that his Yamaha team-mate Spies has won three races, he needs to be on the move.
12th and 8th place finishes for Johnny Rea put him in 8th overall – but that’s well ahead of his factory Honda team-mate Carlos Checa, who sits 14th.
A 6th and 12th place for Shane Byrne was far less disasterous than the double retirement in Phillip Island, so at least he’s off the mark now. Tommy Hill is the final Brit, after 15th and a retirement in Losail.
