After starting out with Cosworth in 2005, Red Bull Racing bagged a multi-year deal to use Ferrari engines from 2006; the Cosworth engine was passed down to new boys Scuderia Toro Rosso. But before the end of the season, Red Bull signed a deal with Renault – champions in 2005 and 2006 – to use their engines. A great deal of effort went into fobbing off the less attractive Ferrari deal to Scuderia Toro Rosso, leaving the Renault engines for Red Bull Racing. That was the mistake.

Today’s Italian GP saw the first race win for Red Bull. But not Red Bull Racing, the flagship team. Amusingly, it was Sebastian Vettel in the Toro Rosso. The cars have been described as ‘similar’, so it’s the engine making the biggest difference. If you compare the performance of the Ferrari and Renault teams, it’s obvious which engine is superior.

Red Bull Racing chose to believe that Renault would continue to dominate, rather than believe that Ferrari would catch up. Foolish.

It’s nice to see both Red Bull Racing’s Christian Horner – “Red Bull Technology can be very proud of the car that they have provided” – and Ferrari’s Stefano Domenicali – “I would like to congratulate Scuderia Toro Rosso, which uses our engines” – gently pointing out their involvement while congratulating Toro Rosso.

I am, conveniently, ignoring one element: the driver. It’s pretty clear that Sebastian Vettel is the shit. The good shit, in fact. But is he going to want to go to Red Bull Racing now? Maybe they’ll try to get that handy Ferrari engine deal back from Scuderia Toro Rosso…
