I’ve been trying to work out what to say about David Coulthard’s decision to retire from Formula 1 at the end of this season.
I could have cynically listed some of the people he didn’t thank in his statement (Max Mosley, the British fans).
I could have suggested that, with Sebastian Vettel widely tipped to step up from Toro Rosso to Red Bull Racing, he might have been pushed if he hadn’t jumped.
I could have pointed out that he’s got a massive jaw.
But that all seems cynical, harsh, pointless, or a combination thereof.
At the end of the day, Coulthard has had a long and reasonably successful career in Formula 1. He’s always spoken his mind, and won the British Grand Prix twice. For that I say this: good work, bloke.
